Unlike some misguided (we’re being kind here) Republicans, Don Yelton, former North Carolina Republican Party Precinct Chairman and Executive Committee member, doesn’t just deserve to have his picture in the Hall of Shame. He should have his own wing.
In an interview with Daily Show correspondent, Aasif Mandvi, Yelton said the mandatory voting restrictions laws now in place in NC and many other southern states weren’t designed to hurt blacks, “they were designed to kick Democrats in the butt,” Yelton said.
In the interview, Yelton uses the term “lazy blacks,” and utters the “n” word in a complaint that blacks can use it, but whites can’t.
He looks stunned when Manvi says, as a joke, “you’re not a racist.” He is speechless as if he’s been insulted. One fully expects him to say, “I am a racist and proud of it.”
He acknowledges voter fraud in his county amounts to one or two people out of 60,000 population, yet he steadfastly supports what can be politely called “voter restrictions.”
He admits that when he posted a picture on Facebook of Obama siting on stump dressed like a witch doctor, “ I wasn’t making fun of Obama I was making fun of my white half of Obama, not the black half.” (I never know it was so evenly divided.)
In this Youtube video of the Daily Show interview, Rachel Madow sets up how the Supreme Court decision to strike down the Voting Rights Act has led to voter restrictions throughout the south.
Watch the interview, but give the NC Republican Party some credit for calling for Yelton’s resignation. We know others like Yelton are just waiting the Republican wings for theor “15 Minutes of Stupidity.”
